How effective and efficient is the equipment life end process in your laboratory? Are there national laws and regulations that make the process ineffective and inefficient? let me know your experience.

  • Because most of the equipment at my facility are either program based or donation, managing the life end process of the equipment is problematic. Also, the bureaucratic nature of our decommissioning equipment in Ghana is not helping at all. Hence, a laboratory manager is forced to leave equipment in or around the laboratory

Depends on the where you get the equipment , if you purchased it , there must be an institutional policy of getting rid of the dead equipment or if it was on lease or placement by vendors , most vendors have a program of recalling dead equipment .

For equipment that we purchased , for it to be disposed there must be a biomedical engineer report indicating that equipment is beyond repair, then they take it to their warehouse , since we are government facility They will seek disposal permit, auction permit or salvage parts and auction.

Overall there is a country guidelines offered by Tanzania Medicine and Medical devices authority on how to get rid of medical devices not necessary lab devices.

  • There are some policies for equipment retirement and removal from the lab. if you have a good relationship with your management and the state ministry, you can easily junk unnecessary equipment out of your lab.
